The Someshwari flows out of the Garo hills of Meghalaya and past Durgapur town, its clear, shallow water running over broad beds of reddish sand. In winter it shrinks to channels you can almost wade across, and the riverbank at Durgapur, with the hills glowing on the horizon at sunset, is the classic Birishiri view.

The river is also a busy workplace, where hundreds of people dig sand and sieve out fragments of coal washed down from the hills. Boats shuttle between Durgapur and the Bijoypur side all day, and early mornings bring soft light over the water and the silhouettes of boatmen, perfect for photographs.

How to go

From Netrokona town take a bus or CNG to Durgapur (≈1.5-2 h, 100-150 BDT). The river ghat is a short walk or rickshaw ride from Durgapur bazar; crossings cost 10-20 BDT.

Where to stay

Guest houses and small hotels in Birishiri and Durgapur (800-3,000 BDT).

Travel tips: The river can rise suddenly after rain in the hills, so avoid swimming in the monsoon. Sunset from the Durgapur bank is the best time to visit.
