Ramu Buddhist Temples

Ramu, a small town on the Bakkhali river about 15 km east of Cox's Bazar, has been a centre of Buddhist life for centuries. Its many kyangs and viharas include the Ramu Central Sima Vihara and the hilltop Ramkot forest monastery, and a huge reclining Buddha at Uttar Mithachhari draws visitors from across the country.

Several temples were rebuilt after an attack in 2012, blending traditional Burmese-style woodwork with new brick structures. The atmosphere is calm, especially in the early morning when monks go out on their alms rounds. On Probarona Purnima, colourful paper lanterns (fanush) are released into the night sky.

How to go

From Cox's Bazar take a bus or CNG to Ramu (≈30-40 min; 50-80 BDT shared or 400-600 BDT reserved), then tour the temples by auto-rickshaw (≈300-500 BDT for a circuit).

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in Cox's Bazar; Ramu has only a few basic hotels (800-1,500 BDT).

Travel tips: Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering shrines and ask before photographing monks. Visit on Probarona Purnima (usually October) for the lantern festival.
