S.M. Sultan Memorial Museum
The riverside home, studio and gallery of the legendary painter S.M. Sultan on the Chitra.
Sheikh Mohammed Sultan (1923-1994), famous for his powerful paintings of muscular, heroic peasants, spent most of his life in his home town of Narail. His house at Machimdia on the bank of the Chitra river has been turned into a memorial complex where he is buried.
The museum gallery displays a selection of his canvases and personal belongings, while the green campus keeps the wooden boat he designed for children to learn drawing on the river, along with the many trees and animals he loved. Sultan's grave lies peacefully in the garden. Sitting by the Chitra here, watching boats and paddy fields across the water, it is easy to see where his vision of rural Bengal came from.
