On 17 April 1971 the leaders of the Liberation War gathered in a mango grove at Baidyanathtala, close to the Indian border, and swore in the first government of Bangladesh. The place was renamed Mujibnagar, and it remains one of the most symbolic sites in the country.

The memorial consists of a striking structure of 23 triangular concrete walls rising in steps, representing the long struggle for independence. Around it, the Mujibnagar complex includes a large relief map of the country showing the war sectors, sculptures recreating the oath-taking and key events of 1971, and the original mango orchard where visitors picnic in the shade. Every 17 April the site hosts national commemorations.
