Fatrar Char (Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary)
A mangrove forest across the river from Kuakata, often called a second Sundarbans.
Fatrar Char, part of the Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary, lies on the far side of the Andharmanik river mouth west of Kuakata. Although almost all visitors arrive from Kuakata, the forest falls within Barguna district. Its mangrove trees, including keora, goran and gewa, and its maze of tidal creeks make it look like a smaller cousin of the Sundarbans.
Trawlers from Kuakata land at a forest jetty, from where a path leads into the trees and along a quiet beach. Monkeys, wild boar, monitor lizards and many birds live here, and the stillness of the forest is a contrast to busy Kuakata. Some trips continue to a rest area and pond inside the forest before returning in the afternoon.
How to go
From Kuakata, shared trawlers leave from the beach near Zero Point or Lebur Char in the morning (≈1-1.5 h each way, 300-500 BDT per person return). From Barguna town, travel via Taltali or reach Kuakata first.
Where to stay
Stay in Kuakata (1,000-20,000 BDT); there is no accommodation in the forest.
