Rabindranath Tagore came to Shilaidaha in the 1890s to manage his family's estates, and the years he spent here, often drifting on the Padma in his houseboat, shaped much of his writing. Poems, short stories and letters from this period, and many of the translations that became the English Gitanjali, are linked to this house.

The three-storey kuthibari, with its distinctive stepped roof and wide verandas, is now a museum run by the Department of Archaeology. It displays the poet's furniture, a palanquin, a houseboat model, paintings and photographs. Mango orchards, a pond and a large lawn surround the building, and the Padma lies a short walk away. Each May a Tagore festival brings music and fairs to the grounds.

How to go

From Kushtia town take a CNG or local bus towards Kumarkhali/Shilaidaha (≈40-60 min, 50-150 BDT), or hire an auto for a round trip with Lalon's shrine (≈800-1,200 BDT).

Where to stay

Stay in Kushtia town hotels (1,200-4,000 BDT); there are no good options at Shilaidaha itself.

Travel tips: Check the museum's weekly closing day before you go. Walk to the Padma bank in the late afternoon for the light Tagore loved.
