Nilsagar

A large ancient tank west of Nilphamari town, linked in legend to King Birat and visited by winter birds.

Nilsagar

Nilsagar is a broad, square tank of about 21 hectares in Gorgram union, north-west of Nilphamari town. It was long known as Birat Dighi, and local legend links it to King Birat of the Mahabharata, said to have dug it for his cattle. The name Nilsagar, "blue sea", was given after independence.

Today the tank is surrounded by tall trees and a raised walkway, with a temple on its bank and quiet ghats. In winter, migratory ducks rest on the water, and the place becomes a favourite picnic and walking spot for people from Nilphamari and Saidpur. Early mornings, when mist sits on the water and the birds are active, are the most atmospheric time to visit.

How to go

Nilsagar is about 14 km from Nilphamari town. Take an auto-rickshaw or CNG (≈30 min, 50-80 BDT shared, 300-400 BDT reserved return).

Where to stay

Stay in Nilphamari town or Saidpur, which has more hotels (1,000-4,000 BDT).

Travel tips: Keep a distance from the birds and do not feed them. Visit on a weekday in winter to avoid picnic noise.
