Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple
One of the revered Shakti Peethas, an old temple in Ishwaripur linked to Raja Pratapaditya.
The Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple at Ishwaripur in Shyamnagar upazila is counted among the Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition, the places where parts of the goddess Sati are believed to have fallen. The present structure is closely associated with Raja Pratapaditya, the 16th-century ruler of Jessore whose capital lay in this area.
The temple has been repaired several times, but its thick walls, arched entrance and old courtyard still give a sense of age. The black image of the goddess, with only her face visible beneath ornaments and cloth, draws devotees from across Bangladesh and India, especially during Kali Puja. Nearby are ruins from Pratapaditya's era, including an old bathhouse known as the Hammamkhana.
