Guthia Mosque (Baitul Aman Jame Masjid)
A modern mosque complex of marble domes, a tall minaret and reflecting pools amid green countryside.
The Baitul Aman Jame Masjid Complex at Changuria in Wazirpur upazila, popularly called Guthia Mosque, was built in the early 2000s and has become one of the most photographed buildings in southern Bangladesh. Its white and cream marble prayer hall is crowned with domes and accompanied by a slender minaret about 58 metres tall.
The mosque stands on landscaped grounds with a large pond, fountains, lawns and flower beds, and at night the illuminated domes reflect in the water. Soil and water said to have been brought from holy sites are kept in a display. Besides the mosque, the complex has an eidgah, a madrasa and parking for the many visitors who come from all over the country.
How to go
Guthia is about 20 km north-west of Barishal city on the Barishal-Banaripara road; take a bus or CNG (≈40 min, 50-100 BDT).
