Bhimruli, a village about 15 km from Jhalokathi town, is famous for its floating market held where three canals meet. From July to September the water is crowded with narrow wooden boats loaded with guavas from the surrounding orchards, part of one of the largest guava-growing areas in Bangladesh.

Farmers sell from their boats to traders on bigger vessels, and the bright green fruit, the paddling boatmen and the dense trees along the banks make an unforgettable scene. Outside the guava season the market still trades in vegetables, lemons and other produce, but on a smaller scale. A boat ride from Bhimruli through the orchard canals and on towards Atghar-Kuriana makes a perfect monsoon day out.

How to go

From Jhalokathi town take an auto or easy-bike to Bhimruli (≈40 min, 50-100 BDT), or hire a boat from Jhalokathi or Swarupkathi for a canal trip (1,500-3,000 BDT per boat).

Where to stay

Stay in Jhalokathi town (simple hotels, 800-2,500 BDT) or in Barishal city, 45 minutes away.

Travel tips: Go early in the morning in August for the biggest market. Ask before photographing farmers and their boats.
