Atia Mosque

An elegant early 17th-century mosque with rich terracotta, once pictured on the ten-taka note.

Atia Mosque

Atia Mosque stands beside the Louhajang river in Delduar, a few kilometres south of Tangail town. Inscriptions date it to 1609-1611, when it was built under Sayeed Khan Panni, a member of the Afghan Panni family that later became the zamindars of Karatia.

The mosque combines a large main dome with a covered veranda, and its brick walls are covered in some of the finest terracotta decoration in Bangladesh, with floral panels, hanging motifs and geometric patterns. Its image once appeared on the old ten-taka note. Set among trees beside a pond and the river, it is a peaceful spot and still in daily use for prayer.
