Aath Kabar (Eight Graves), Natudah
A memorial complex at the graves of eight freedom fighters killed in a 1971 battle in Damurhuda.
In August 1971 a group of freedom fighters was surrounded by Pakistani troops near Natudah in Damurhuda upazila. Most managed to retreat, but eight young men were killed and were later buried side by side at Jagannathpur. The site, known simply as Aath Kabar, became one of the most important Liberation War memorials in the south-west.
Today the eight graves lie within a landscaped memorial complex with a monument, a small museum and library about the war, and a pond and gardens. Local people mark the day of the battle every year with prayers and tributes. It is a quiet, moving place that tells the story of 1971 through one village and eight names.
